As the clocks go back autumn is well and truly under way and winter is just around the corner. Traditionally autumn was a time for the keen gardener to cut down, sweep up and make the garden tidy for winter. However our understanding of the needs of the wildlife that live and visit our gardens is much greater and most of us want to garden in a way that will encourage and help the many species that rely on gardens to survive the winter ahead. So here are some helpful hints to help the wildlife in your garden.

Seating in a garden of any size it a must, from the all weather bench which stays in place all year round so you can grab that bit of last season sun on a Sunday afternoon in October or a sunny winter morning in February. To the versatile folding deck chair that can follow the sun round in mid summer so you can delight in different aspects of your garden at different times of the day. To the formal paved terrace with table and chairs to a small hidden patio with swing seat, all have their place.

As we enter the deep days of winter and darkness fills large quantities of the day, we tend to retreat inside and the garden can disappear into the gloom and deepening dusk. But this extra length of darkness can bring a new dimension to your garden, this is when garden lighting comes into it's own. There is of course always the practical, not nose diving down a set of steps, or turning out of the garage in a dark damp December afternoon to walk into the shrubbery and miss the turning onto the garden path.

If a garden has been neglected it may need significant clearing and landscaping work to restore it to a manageable condition. Arcadia Garden Design can provide the equipment and people needed to bring your garden back to life.

As high summer approaches, many gardeners feel that colour socked boarders of mid-summer are over and July into August is a difficult time to injected summer brightness into the garden. Crocosmia can be your saviour. As hardy as hell, putting up with must soil conditions and creating great sweeps of colour there is much to love about this dependable old favourite. C. Lucifer: This is the big Daddy of Crocosmia, due to it's height and the smack you in the face colour, it can't be missed. Tall clumps of leaves 1/1.2m tall with flowers of vibrant red produced June to July.

Arcadia Garden Design offers a flexible and personal service, tailored to meet the needs of individual clients, their gardens and budgets. We can produce plans for a single border, or design and build complete gardens. Some clients just need advice, so a single consultation is sufficient. Others want a full design service and then build the garden themselves. Some use Arcadia Garden Design to carry out the construction work and then do the planting themselves. Or vice versa. Whatever level of service you require, Arcadia Garden Design can provide it.
