Often seen as a quintessential feature of a classic open fireplace the fire hood or fireplace canopy has a central role in ensuring the smoke from your fire goes up the chimney and not into the room. They also offer the opportunity to reduce the amount of heat lost up the chimney, especially when the fire is not in use if a chimney baffle is included in the open fire hoods design. Our aim is to assist our customers to create a centrepiece out of the fireplace but we must also create something that will do its job.

Here at Camelot not only do we pride ourselves on our handmade open fires, anything from open fire basket grates to ornate canopies and hoods, we also take pride in offering our customers the best experience. Below are a few of the reviews our customers have shared with us on completion of their new open fire. Paul was able to design an unobtrusive canopy to work with our original chimney and fireplace in a 16th century cottage renovation. We now have a lovely working "open" fire in our dining room which has been great over the winter months.

The inception of Camelot Real Fires, as with many other family businesses, arose from the frustration of not being able to find a fire place specialist to provide exactly what you are looking for. In 1970, Trevor Shaw decided he wanted to buy a real open fire with a canopy for his traditional fireplace. After months of searching (without google!), his efforts turned up nothing that he felt was good enough for his family and his home. Being a skilled engineer himself, he decided to not only build his own, but to fill the gap in the market, and thus Camelot Real Fires was born.

It's reported that every year between 70 and 100 thatched properties experience a serious fire. Over the last few years, thatch fires have become an increasing problem, with a large percentage of incidents being associated with modern multi-fuel or wood burning closed stoves. We have a lot of experience with thatched properties and would be delighted to assist you by designing a safe open fire solution that looks amazing, is safe and keeps you warm. Why are thatched properties different? Traditionally, chimneys in older thatched properties were commonly used in conjunction with open fires, rather than closed stoves or woodburners.
