Based in Stratford-upon-Avon, Hawkes Edwards is a RIBA Chartered Practice working on projects across the UK. Founded in 1955 the practice has always specialised in historic buildings and new build within a heritage setting, with the majority of projects based around either the sympathetic adaptation, alteration, conservation and repair of listed buildings or new buildings within a conservation area. We value careful and conservative repair, and believe that the alteration and re-use of these buildings is best informed and inspired within a strong design environment.

We are a RIBA Chartered Practice and offer a full service based on a traditional service and the RIBA work stages. We can take your project from concept to completion but also pick it up from anywhere in between or offer a flexible service. We offer advice on development, planning potential, feasibility studies, adaptation, extensions, historic buildings, new buildings, and maintenance. For historic buildings we carry out inspections and offer a consultancy service. We are inspecting architects for six Diocese and also the Churches Conservation Trust along with a number of regional and family trusts.

Hawkes Edwards are AABC* Accredited Architects; this is a guarantee of our competency and experience in the conservation of Protected and Listed buildings. The practice is also accredited by RIBA for building and conservation work. Hawkes Edwards have always had a focus on Listed buildings, with 95% of our portfolio featuring structures which are Listed in their own right, within a Conservation Area, or have some element of heritage sensitivity that requires an experienced hand. Having specialised in historic buildings for such a long time, we have gathered significant knowledge and experience in repairs and preservation, as well as when best to take a new approach for the better protection and conservation of a building where the status quo is not prevailing.

We are currently Approved Inspecting Architects for London, Leicester, Coventry, Gloucester and Birmingham Dioceses, as well as being Architects for Non-Conformist, Roman Catholic churches and private chapels. We also continue to inspect and oversee repairs for a number of disused churches under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. Our ecclesiastical work occurs countrywide but is largely focused on the Midlands, Merseyside, Cheshire and the South East. It covers conservation and repairs, as well as alterations and improvements for changes of use or greater comfort.

For the first phase we repaired the farmhouse, rebuilt the partially demolished barns with a new Oak roof and frame, and built an extension to link the house and barns. The second phase included indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a new office in the style of a dovecote and garages.

What's new?

If you go down to the woods today. there is something surprising we are putting together amongst these trees, not in the woods, but part of a listed house in the second city. Working with Messenger Construction. #conservation

News today of new garden and landscape listings by Historic England, and some very fine garden spaces included, York Gate with its Arts and Crafts theme is especially close to our hearts but we are impressed by the others too - especially the industrial landscapes - well worth a look.
