Welcome to Charles Newmarch French Polishers, a leading independent woodcare specialist based in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire. Expert conservation, repairs and sensitive restoration of your antique and period furniture is guaranteed in our long established company. Undertaken by highly trained and experienced French Polishers your valuable and treasured furniture is safe in our hands. Using a skilled combination of traditional techniques and modern finishes we can restore your much loved furniture or bring it up to date.

The company was founded in 1944 by John W James, with Charles Newmarch joining him as his first apprentice. Charles took over the business in 1972, carrying on the same policy of combining traditional French Polishing techniques with changing technologies, and new specialist finishes. The company, now owned by his son Graham Newmarch, continues to provide this trusted and personal service. I would just like to say thank you so much for the wonderful work you have done for us in restoring our original 1912 mahogany fire surround and brass stair clips to reflect a very clean but slightly aged appearance.

At Charles Newmarch French Polishing we can guarantee that our expert team can assist you with whatever query you have. We have years of experience in the care and restoration of furniture, fixtures and fittings, and are equally happy to restore your grand piano to a traditional high full bodied finish, or to recolour your kitchen to bring it up to date. In our workshops we see the widest variety of work you can imagine, from car dashboard parts to longcase clocks. We have excellent connections and relationships with all other trades required to offer a complete service, including cleaning of soft furnishings, cabinet repairs, and replacement of glass, mirrors etc.

Do you have a favourite chair, dining suite, or bedroom furniture that is looking a little worse for wear? We can repair scratch and indent damage, remove unsightly ring marks and restore and refinish all kinds of contemporary or reproduction furniture to achieve its true potential. We can also make colour changes to update the look of your furniture and blend with newer items in your home. Often furniture that you've loved for a long time is of better quality than that you can replace it with. For smaller accidents such as indent damage or water marks to your furniture or fittings, you may find that often your household insurance will cover the cost of repair and restoration.

If you are looking for a company who can work with you to achieve excellence in contemporary furniture making, than please give us a call to discuss your requirements. We work with furniture makers from around the country, increasingly London based, who are of international repute, to ensure their pieces are finished to the highest standards, which often involves us travelling great distances including Europe and America. Graham will be happy to show you around our workshops, discuss your work in detail, and create sample patterns for finishes you are considering.
