We invite you to spend a day at the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein. The remarkable ensemble of contemporary architecture brings together the commercial and cultural aspects of the Swiss furniture manufacturer: for decades, the buildings designed by renowned architects have made the production site a magnet for fans of design and architecture from all over the world. We look forward to your visit!
At Vitra we believe that thoughts and feelings are shaped by our surroundings - whether at home, at work or on the go. That is why we strive daily to improve interiors through the power of good design. Vitra founder Willi Fehlbaum first came across creations by Ray and Charles Eames in the early 1950s. This decisive moment marked Vitra's beginnings as a design company. Vitra has collaborated with international designers and architects ever since. While the first generation laid the company's commercial foundations, and the second added a cultural dimension through the development of the Vitra Campus and the Vitra Design Museum with its collection, the third generation puts the spotlight on sustainable thinking and action.
The VitraHaus, built by Herzog & de Meuron, is Vitra's flagship store and home to the Vitra Home Collection. Here, you can view furniture arrangements in different design styles, which include both the great Vitra classics and the latest contemporary designs. This means that you can find inspiration for your home, explore your taste in design and try out, order and purchase furniture and design objects. Enjoy the view from the loft and then set off on a tour of discovery: in addition to the showroom over four floors, a shop, the Lounge Chair Atelier and the Caf await you on the ground floor.
With its ensemble of contemporary architecture set peacefully at the foot of the Tllinger Hgel, the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein near Basel is an ideal venue for events of all kinds. Buildings designed by world-renowned architects have transformed the site into a magnet for architecture enthusiasts across the globe, fostering a creative and inspiring environment - the perfect setting for your business-related or private occasion. The Vitra Campus Visitor Services team would be happy to arrange an individual programme for your event upon request.
When a Vitra object arrives in a home, an office or a public space, it already comes with a long story. One of a designer who, in collaboration with Vitra, starts a seemingly endless development process, filled with trials and errors. One of a manufacturing attitude where the details are not the details, but what makes the quality of your new piece. And you take this tale forward, enriching it with the stories of your own space. Our story began in 1953 when Willi Fehlbaum, the founder of Vitra, discovered chairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames on a trip to the USA and decided to become a furniture manufacturer.
Vitra takes an in-depth approach and strives to get to the heart of the matter. Only then are lasting solutions found, instead of passing on problems to others. Sustainable product development is complex: research, evaluation, experimentation, scrapping ideas and starting over again. Materials, production routes, packaging, transport, recycling and waste disposal must be taken into consideration. Development processes at Vitra take slightly longer as we aim to achieve the best solutions.
Vitra conveys its philosophy and expertise through architecture, exhibitions, publications and workshops. The Vitra Campus provides a platform for an intensive exploration of design: the Vitra Design Museum provides valuable impetus for the world of international architecture and design, organising exhibitions that examine the past, present and the future of design, and its comprehensive collection of the most important furniture creations from the eighteenth century to the modern day traces the history of industrial furniture design.
Vitra works with independent "authors" - primarily with designers, but also with architects and graphic artists. What distinguishes the work of these people from that of other designers is the fact that their personal imprint and outlook is reflected in every one of their products. In contrast, designers in fixed employment must adapt their personal interpretation to the requirements of the client. We do not define our roles in terms of client and contractor. Two business partners - the designer and Vitra - embark on a common quest for an optimal solution.
