Mr Fletcher used to make free-standing furniture the old way with real wood and joints then hand polish in a small factory at Britannia Bridge, Ince, Wigan. With the invention of a brand new board called 'Conti Board' the furniture industry changed. In the early 1950s, 'Conti Board' or particle board kitchens started to come into use in furniture construction but, in many cases, it often remained more expensive than solid wood.
