Our aim is to maintain the tradition of hand made wooden decorative cabinetry and joinery in an age of mass produced machine manufacturing. Lion House Joinery specialises in bespoke architectural joinery, specialist cabinet making and fine antique restoration and conservation. We undertake commissions for individuals as well as commercial shops, office, building & construction.

Lion House Joinery was founded by Mark Hewitt in 1989 primarily to restore antique furniture and produce high quality hand made copies. Later we expanded our portfolio of work to include all aspects of restoration, cabinetry and joinery by repairing the woodwork on the properties of our furniture clients, as a result we have moved to larger premises in the heart of the Suffolk countryside and invested in equipment in order to maintain our high standards of craftmanship. Mark studied as a cabinet maker and furniture designer at the prestigious Rycotewood college in Oxfordshire, before training as an antique restorer with a leading antique dealer in Long Melford, Suffolk.

We design and make to order a range of bird houses, dovecotes and free standing garden furniture such as benches, tables and chairs. We also design and make garden accessories like glazed cloches and unique free or wall standing green houses and solid wood gates all made in traditional or modern styles. All of our garden pieces are lovingly handmade in a variety of sizes using the highest quality hard or softwood and can be left natural, painted or stained.

We specialise in high quality bespoke joinery with a particular emphasis on meeting our clients individual requirements. The majority of our work is on older period or listed properties, whether this be repair, conservation or replacement, although we have a feel for traditional architecture, contemporary designs are also undertaken. Using only the finest quality stains, polishes, varnishes & fixings we strive to produce work that will enhance older properties and can also add interest and character to more modern surroundings.

We are able to offer a comprehensive cabinet making service, which includes bespoke furniture making in traditional or contemporary styles. Exact replication or copies are our speciality whether this be matching a chair to an existing set or making the entire set to compliment an existing dining room table. At Lion house Joinery we take great care to satisfy our clients individual requirements, with over 25 years of experience delivering the highest possible standard of craftsmanship and cabinet making.

We make and repair many styles of window from modern to traditional using both hard and soft wood from sustainable sources. Generally we construct our windows using Oak, Sapele and Pine, other timbers are used when specified by our clients which can be left natural, stained or painted as desired. All properties lose heat through their windows and we fit double glazed sealed units to most of the windows we make and in addition we use the latest weather seals to help keep the elements out and the heat in during winter and they tend to help to lower temperatures in summer.

At Lion House Joinery we build fine solid wood staircases that are handmade and specifically designed to each customers requirements. We use a variety of hardwoods like Oak, Ash, Walnut, Beech, Maple, Chestnut and Cherry, all of which have separate grain structures, colour and density characteristics. We also build staircases in softer timbers like Pine which provide a cheaper option where function and cost is a higher priority. The styles we specialise in are straight, turned with winders, dogleg, dogleg with winders, open well, half turn and bifurcated, in addition we offer our clients the choice of tread construction which include, housed/closed string and cut string.

Over two or three hundred years, furniture inevitably suffers damage from day to day usage and, in some cases, abuses. English, French and continental furniture both town and country are my special field with particular attention to colouring to achieve that look of well loved antiquity. The scope of our work covers not only antiques but more modem pieces also, all requiring a high degree of precision crafting, polishing, colouring and in depth understanding of patination. Other areas we specialise in include, painted Austrian Empire furniture, Folk art, marquetry, inlaying including Boulle work, veneering including oyster, copy carving, turning, laminating, guilding and paint effects.

We design and make various styles of porches, all of which are sympathetically designed to compliment the architectural tradition of its location. Our designs will allow for sufficient space for a person to comfortably pause before entering or after exiting the building and can be as large or small as desired. We generally make and fit porches on older properties using traditional construction methods and classical designs featuring fluting, dentils, architrave's, columns and capitals. These also include Gothic, Tudor, Georgian and more modern styles as well.

At Lion House Joinery we can supply and fit every kind of door using only the finest hard and soft wood supplied from sustainable sources.
