We're 70 staff members who are architects, teachers, designers, administrators, historians, storytellers and lovers of Chicago. We're 450 volunteer docents from all walks of life joined together by one thing-a passion to provide an extraordinary experience to our visitors. We're a board of trustees built of industry thought leaders. Together, we're the Chicago Architecture Center (CAC)-the world's largest public architecture organization, working to promote Chicago as the global center of architectural innovation while creating programs that inspire the next generation of design thinkers.
The Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) reveals the stories behind the buildings - and the people behind the stories. Here's a look at what makes the CAC one-of-a-kind. Through workshops, programs, competitions and mentoring, we work with thousands of students and families. Open House Chicago is a free, two-day architecture festival that offers behind-the-scenes access to more than 250 buildings in neighborhoods across Chicago. The annual festival instills pride in community and place. We make learning exciting.
We're so glad you are considering bringing your high school or college student group to the Chicago Architecture Center for an educational experience. If you are looking to book a workshop or tour for K-8 students, please visit our Field Trips (K-8) page. We ask that you make your request for a reservation at least six weeks in advance. Once we've received your reservation request, we'll send a confirmation agreement specifying the date and time of your field trip (workshop or tour).
We were very pleased with our experiences with CAF in touring the lakefront and the river architecture trip. We arrived for our river trip only to find that heavy rains day before made river cruise impossible (couldn't get boats under the bridges), but the tour provided instead of the lakefront was most enjoyable and informative. Our guide provided wonderful historical commentary and was very helpful in answering questions along the way. Returned two days later for rescheduled river cruise and that was even better. Since we'd had first trip cancelled they comped us for the tour and everything went off without a hitch. The river tour is a must for anyone who hasn't done it before and CAF is the group to do with!
They never disappoint. I could easily take one of their tours every day - they're incredibly detailed and as much as I read about Chicago architecture, I still learn new things through them. And, best of all, they're FUN!
Nice place! The shop had many Chicago momentos and it was right next to Corner Bakery, my go to place while in tour of duty!
Frank Lloyd Wright designed Unity Temple from 1906-08 for the Unitarian Universalist congregation that still uses the building today. It was Wright’s first major public building commission and an antecedent of Modernism. https://bit.ly/ 3aX2St9
