2014 sees the launch of our brand new Thatchers Harvest Welsh Flour. Made from older heritage varieties of wheat nurtured without the use of chemicals in the time honoured way - a delicious and unique taste from the rolling hills of mid Wales. The grand launch is on Saturday the 24th of May in the Big Skill Craft Field attached to the Hay on Wye Literary Festival and will be a good opportunity for anyone interested to taste our bread made from what we call our tri perpoice wheat harvest grown near Builth Wells.
Alan is the founder of Pembrokeshire Thatch and Carpentry Services. A carpenter by first trade, he is now involved in timber work and thatching. He specialises in growing his own thatching wheat, which is used for both thatching purposes and as an agricultural product. His belief in and passion for his craft means that he also teaches and trains others in crop and wetland management. Only 150 years ago, in rural Wales the majority of roofs were thatched. As a by-product of food production, straw was freely available; this is a process I am passionate to preserve.
We have thatched many houses in a wide variety of materials including combed wheat reed and water reed. Our work takes us to all corners of the UK and occasionally abroad. We pride ourselves in using where possible, locally sourced materials used in the vernacular style and can advise on any traditional local thatching styles in your area. Originally thatched with combed wheat reed, at some point in its life this roof had been re-thatched using water reed. The original wheat thatch had nearly all been stripped off at this stage.
