As the leading professional body for resource and waste professionals, CIWM (Chartered Institution of Wastes Management) is the voice of the sector and represents over 5,500 individuals in the UK and overseas. CIWM has a unique understanding of the sector. Our professional knowledge and trusted reputation enables us to inform and influence legislation and policy, playing a vital part in shaping the future role and reputation of the sector. As humanity has grown and developed, the stresses we place on our environment and human health from the extraction, use and disposal of resources have grown too.

The role of the Scientific & Technical Committee is to develop technical policies for the Institution, promote best practice, and provide a forum for the discussion and development of wastes and secondary resources management, together with other relevant environmental issues, for both members of the Institution and for the benefit of the public at large. It fulfils these objectives in a number of ways: by the publication of a monthly Journal, a peer reviewed quarterly journal CWRM - Communications in Waste and Resource Management, the regular production of guidance notes setting out best practice in various waste related subject areas, and the convening of conferences, seminars & workshops.

CIWM works in close partnership and liaises with other organisations and Government Departments. ESA represents the UK's waste management and secondary resources industry. Our Members provide essential waste and secondary resources management services to the public and private sectors. We are working with governments, Parliaments and regulators to bring about a sustainable system of waste management for the UK. The Society for the Environment is a pleading independent, non-political umbrella organisation for environmental and sustainability professionals.

The resource and waste management sector has been through various cycles of change since our foundation in 1898 and is now in as great a state of flux as ever before. As humanity has grown and developed, the stresses we place on our environment and human health from the extraction, use and disposal of resources have grown too. As competition for those resources intensifies, the economic and social consequences of poor resource management become ever more serious. The safe and professional management of resources throughout their life cycle is therefore an increasingly urgent priority.
