Since the very first Hospice Nurse started work in 1983, Northern Ireland Hospice has grown to be one of Northern Ireland's leading charities, providing specialist palliative care to 4,000 patients every year. On 4th April 2014, and after many months of excavation and demolition, the first brick was laid of the new Northern Ireland Adult Hospice. Two long years of fundraising, project management and negotiations ensued. After many years as a private residence, Somerton House became the Preparatory department for Belfast High School, before being bought by Northern Ireland Hospice in 1983.
The support volunteers provide in our hospices is vital. Volunteers are involved in a range of areas, and roles can include receptionists or gardeners, complementary therapists or bereavement support members, catering assistants or drivers, hairdressers and laundry volunteers. Volunteering opportunities are available in our Adult Hospice, Children's Hospice, in the community, in our retail shops and for corporate businesses. Volunteers work directly with patients and their families, behind the scenes in an administrative role, or helping to raise money.
Have been an inpatient twice now at the Hospice for symptom control and pain management. Cannot thank all of the staff enough, they are amazing and I am truly grateful for all that they have done for me.
