In April 2016, the Glen Wyvis founders launched the biggest-ever community crowd-funding campaign in UK history. Following the detailed planning, design and costing phase, the construction of the Glen Wyvis Distillery commenced in January 2017. The Founders of the project were clear from the outset that the Distillery should create benefit for the local community and local businesses and that the Distillery should operate entirely on renewable energy. The Distillery generates electricity on site by a wind turbine and solar PV, and the process heat is provided by a steam biomass boiler.

Eagle Brae offers five star luxury self catering log cabins surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Scottish Highlands. The cabins are fully independent of fossil fuels and run completely on natural resources, enabling Eagle Brae to achieve a green tourism gold award. R&I Cruden supplied and installed a wood pellet biomass boiler system, underfloor heating and all plumbing requirements in eight individual cabins. Fuel is delivered in bulk to a central fuel store then each boiler is filled individually.
Constructed in 2019, Carse Stables serves as a retreat in the Highlands of Scotland. The new build project required a full plumbing and mechanical package, supplied and installed by R&I Cruden. To provide hot water and space heating to all bedrooms and throughout, R&I Cruden supplied and installed 50kW single phase ground source heat pumps with associated hot water cylinders. The ground source heat pumps facilitate a new underfloor heating system throughout the ground floor, with a radiator system on the first floor.
The client was considering an upgrade of their existing heating system and was interested to explore renewable heating options. With sufficient space to accommodate ground loops, the client opted for a ground source heat pump following the advice of R&I Cruden. The client later expressed interest to install a solar PV system to generate their own electricity and reduce future electricity bills. R&I Cruden supplied and installed a Vaillant 8kW FlexoTHERM ground source heat pump system to facilitate hot water and heating requirements.
With the previous community hall no longer fit for purpose, the Tomatin Community Hub was constructed in 2019 to create a larger space to encourage community activity. With the committee keen to utilise renewable energy options, R&I Cruden were appointed to supply and install all plumbing and mechanical requirements. To provide hot water and space heating, R&I Cruden supplied and installed a Mitsubishi 42.8kW CAHV air source heat pump, operating in combination with a joules underfloor heating system.
The client estimated their annual electricity bill to be 25,000, therefore wished to save costs and reduce their carbon footprint. The client was also working towards achieving Gold status as part of Visit Scotland Tourism Award Scheme. R&I Cruden installed a 4kw solar PV system at 11 cottages on site, each system made up of 16 panels. All the Solar panels were installed together on a south facing grass bank so the authentic look of the cottage roofs was preserved. As a result, 176 solar panels now lie on the bank providing electricity to each holiday cottage.
Mechanical ventilation systems are commonly used in commercial or industrial buildings. A spiral or rectangular ductwork system is installed to control the temperature and humidity levels by distributing air movement throughout the building. R&I Cruden offer a design, installation and maintenance solutions for all types of ventilation systems. Heat recovery units are predominantly used in new builds that are passive with extremely high insulation levels. This creates an airtight environment within the property, causing moisture to accumulate and form mould or dampness.
The client was eager to find a more efficient heating system to replace a solid fuel stove system in their property. With incentivised schemes and interest free loans available for renewable installations, the client was interested to explore renewable heating options. R&I Cruden provide a full design and build service for mechanical projects including heating, plumbing, ventilation and, most importantly, have extensive experience of renewables. R&I Cruden supplied and installed a 5kW Mitsubishi Ecodan air source heat pump with 210 litre pre-plumbed hot water cylinder and associated equipment including all pipework and fittings.
To improve the facilities at Invergarry Primary School, a full plumbing and mechanical refurbishment was completed on the existing building by R&I Cruden. Furthermore, a new extension was constructed to provide the school with additional classroom space. R&I Cruden supplied and installed 2no. Mitsubishi 14kW Ecodan air source heat pumps in cascade with hot water cylinder, buffer tank and all associated equipment. To provide space heating, a Joules underfloor heating system was installed with fan convectors and overdoor heaters.
