In 1987 he applied for a trainee design consultant position with a leading independent upmarket kitchen studio company. The option on Ashley's contract was quickly taken up by his employer, and they invested their time and money in developing his innate design ability. As their pupil, Ashley was taught the importance of all the necessary technical and safety requirements of the kitchen design business, beyond the aesthetic imperative. Ashley learnt how to survey client's properties accurately, identifying potential issues well in advance, and advising the clients accordingly.
Sometimes we are asked to design a kitchen in a very small space. Thankfully I do enjoy finding solutions to potentially problematic briefs. This kitchen measured one and a half by two and a half metres, and was in an alcove off the sitting-dining room, so whatever we were going to fit had to compliment the quality of furniture and fitments in the flat. Our main concern was to install all the necessary equipment and fitments. With worksurface at a premium we opted for a medium size sink bowl, and by choosing Corian we could specify one of their bespoke integrated sinks in the same Anthracite colour as the work surface.
This South Kensington apartment was refurbished to a very high standard, by an internationally renowned property development company; for whom we have completed a number of kitchen projects. The end-client took a very keen interest in the fine details of this kitchen. It was decided upon a handle-less design in a horizontal veneer, with exclusive Statuario marble work surfaces, wall cladding and end cladding to the island. The marble was built up to a thickness of 10cm for real added drama. Miele appliances were chosen, with the telescopic hood seamlessly blended into the wall unit above the induction hob, maintaining a single horizontal line of upper wall units.
