Hillbans have a proud tradition of providing a prompt reliable service which we believe makes all the difference in what can be a traumatic time for any householder. Our trained staff are here to help you from your first enquiry through the survey and report stage and on to managing the contract in a prompt and effective manner. Above all, we remember that communication is vital and we will keep you informed at all times. Carl started with Hillbans in 1983 as a trainee Surveyor. He then studied and qualified first at the Buckinghamshire College of Higher Education in Timber Infestation surveying in January 1986 then at the Institute of Wood Science as a Certified Surveyor in Remedial Treatments in 1995 and lastly at the Institute of Wood Preserving and Damp-Proofing as a Certified Surveyor in Structural Waterproofing in 2008 when he also gained the 'Student of the Year award.

Hillbans are not only involved with waterproofing refurbished Basements, we also work closely with Designers and Specifiers to waterproof new new-build Basement and Cellar structures, lift shafts etc. BS8102:2009 Code of Practice for Protection of Below Ground Structures against water from the Ground states that almost all Basement structures are likely to be subjected to water pressure at some period during their life. Even when the site examination indicates dry conditions, the risk of waterlogging in the future should be considered.

Dry Rot is a term often used as a cover all for rotten timber. However, Dry Rot Fungus (or Serpula lacrymans) is a complex fungal growth capable of causing considerable and widespread damage to property in the right conditions. Left untreated, or indeed treated incorrectly, it is capable of rapid growth and has few boundaries providing there is a supply of moisture, fuel (timber) and air, all of which are in plentiful supply within our dwellings. It is vitally important that Dry Rot is correctly diagnosed and treated since the treatments involve removal of wallplaster and structural/joinery timbers generally to at least 1 metre beyond the last sign of attack.

Top picture is a sample of traditional lime pointing on an Island stone building. Gary's skill with the tools really brought out the beauty of the stone and the pointing takes a back seat. The second picture (not our work) tells a different story altogether. Not judging.you decide which you prefer.
