In 1920, Welwyn Garden City was the second, after Letchworth, to be designated a "Garden City". The community benifited from lessons learnt by it's founder, Sir Ebenezer Howard. Howard's original concept was to create open spaces within a community and yet going further by wishing the people as a whole took an interest in creating wellbeing and wealth for the greater good.

However, it's history dates back to the Mesolithic era of 10,000 BC. Evidence found in the towns Northbrooks area in the 1970's in the form of flint axeheads, blades and hammers are now displayed in the Harlow Museum.
