The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) was founded in 1916 as the professional body for all chartered architects in Scotland and is the foremost Institute in the country dealing with architecture and the built environment. The RIAS has charitable status and offers a wide range of services and products for architects, students of architecture, construction industry professionals and all those with an interest in the built environment and the design process. The Institute of Architects of Scotland was founded in 1840 by architects pre-eminent in the neo-classical revival in Scotland - William Burn, David Rhind, Robert Reid, James Gillespie Graham, William Playfair and Thomas Hamilton.

The scheme is very simple and all contributions go to charity - architects across Scotland are offering hour-long consultations to the public in return for a £45 donation (a bargain!) to the Architects Benevolent Society (ABS). The ABS helps people of all ages who have experienced redundancy, illness, accident or bereavement. One in six of those cared for is under the age of 35, and half of those helped by the Society are below retirement age. If you're an architect, you can sign-up to the scheme by downloading the architect's form.

The RIAS promotes the development of Scottish architecture to the public. It offers safeguards to clients dealing with our architect members, regulates the profession and provides services to members. The RIAS offers a wide range of benefits, services and products for architects, students of architecture, construction industry professionals, architectural clients and all those with an interest in the built environment and the design process. Benefits include accreditation schemes, events and awards, marketing and promotion, publishing, online and offline services.

RIAS employment advertisements are the first place employers and potential employees look for architectural jobs in Scotland or to advertise when opportunities arise. Jobs are listed on this page. Please note that this is not a recruitment service but an alternative option for recruiting architectural staff. We can advertise the vacancies on this page with a link to practice email addresses and websites to enable applicants to respond directly. We are conscious that recruitment advertising can be expensive and this is one way of reaching all chartered architects in Scotland and RIAS members outwith.

Since 1995, the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland has offered accreditation in building conservation to architects as a means of meeting the requirements of funding bodies, employers and clients. Accreditation confirms that these practitioners are suitably qualified and experienced to act as the lead professional in conservation work. Clients should undertake their own careful selection process to ensure that the proposed architect is suitable for their project.

Our Student Awards, in tandem with Architecture & Design Scotland, are an annual highlight – marking the vigour of Scotland's architectural schools and the tremendous talent of our student members. The future of architecture is in their hands – and certain to be both careful and invigorating. The shortlist and winners for 2020 can be viewed here. Now in their 19th year, the student awards are a mark of the continuing high standards of Scottish architectural education and ensure that both construction professionals and the public can enjoy the creativity and vision of Scotland's future architects.

Architects make a unique and far reaching contribution to the built environment. Their designs should be responsive to social, cultural and environmental issues, utilising the rich potential of science and technology to achieve quality in the design of spaces, forms and details. For architects to play this effective and rewarding role, the following skills and knowledge are required. Scotland has a long tradition of excellence in architectural education. The five schools of architecture are set in cities of differing character and each offers particular specialisations within a broad-based curriculum.

RIAS Quarterly is the member journal for the RIAS, published four times per year and delivered to all RIAS members. RIAS Quarterly showcases quality architecture in Scotland and internationally. The journal features a vibrant selection of the most thoughtful and stimulating writing on architecture in the UK with an emphasis on cogent analysis, in-depth coverage of significant projects, insightful profiles of key figures and essential business updates for the profession. Internationally renowned figures contribute to RIAS Quarterly: the publication has included features by Ian Ritchie of Ian Ritchie Architects and the late David Mackay of Barcelona-based MBM.

You can then save it to your computer or tablet. The RIAS is very grateful to all the talented architects and artists who have supplied their drawings for this scheme.

Whatever the size of your building project, it makes sense to consult a professional. Architects offer unrivalled training and experience in the design and construction of buildings. The RIAS Directory provides information on architectural practices working across Scotland.

This diary provides a list of upcoming meetings of the RIAS, Chapters and other construction-related organisations, along with events of interest to architects and those interested in architecture.

A brilliant resource for architects in Scotland and wider afield.

Excellent organization giving support to the Profession. Have always found the staff to be friendly, helpful and always professional.
