Rupert and Sara Eley took over the garden in 1995, and opened the plant centre in 1996. Rupert is the fourth generation of his family to garden at East Bergholt Place, his great-grandfather Charles having started to lay out the gardens at the turn of the last century. As well as Rupert and Sara, Cuthbert and Rosie, their 2 children you may also spot Puff the terrier, Blue the peacock, a white peahen and her fast growing chick. Rupert has been a keen gardener since childhood and after an early career in the city trained in horticulture at Hadlow College.
This is situated in the Victorian Walled garden at East Bergholt Place adjacent to the garden and arboretum and has been created by Rupert and Sara from scratch. Since opening in the Spring of 1996 the Plant Centre has grown considerably now listing over 6000 different plants including trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants including ferns, grasses and bamboos, climbers, roses, heathers, conifers, herbs and fruit. We are now able to offer a mail order service from September to March as well as a customer order service and will be happy to gather together and reserve any plants for collection (within a month).
Lovely day for Halloween fun with grandchildren, staff were great, and helpful, beautiful gardens, many thanks
We popped in for a look around and ended up buying 'loads' lol the staff are so friendly and knowledgeable we will be back very soon for another top.
A wonderful place to visit, the garden is absolutely stunning and peaceful. as an amateur gardener I was able to ask advise about the plants from the.
You can see the reward of allowing bulbs to naturalise in the garden, these snowdrops (Galanthus) and winter aconites (Eranthis) form a glorious carpet.
Beginning to unfurl the lovely pale blue petals of Iris 'Katharine Hodkin' (Reticulata) that will be marked with a deeper blue and yellow. This sweet little Iris would make a splash of winter colour in your rockery, planted en masse under a tree, or grown in containers close to the house so you can enjoy them from your window.
Our new stock of Camellias are full of bud and some are already in bloom, this beauty is Camellia x williamsii 'Debbie'. Call on 01206 299224 and we would be happy to let you know the other varieties we have available. We are open for visitors if you would prefer to come along.
Due to the snow we are now closed today.
We now have new fresh stock of Camellias, Rhododendrons and Azaleas and a selection of lush green Ferns ready for your garden. So why not pop in for a visit and check out what is available, or call on 01206 299224 and we would be happy to arrange delivery or collection.
