We're working hard to become a cleaner, greener business - reducing waste in our daily operations, and gearing up for a low carbon, sustainable future - targeting our daily operations to be net-zero by 2031. The past year saw encouraging progress against a number of commitments in this strategy. We dramatically improved the amount of spoil we recycle, and beat our regulatory target for the first time. We also made our vehicle fleet greener by introducing a range of gas powered vehicles and cleaner engines and exceeded our targets for reducing pipe leaks - alleviating the build up of harmful greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
We educate and protect the region against CO, through schools workshops; customer briefings in the home; public awareness campaigns and by equipping all our emergency engineers with handheld CO detectors. This table takes a detailed look at our performance throughout our current regulatory period, known as RIIO-GD1. We train our emergency engineers to deliver CO awareness sessions following call outs to local homes. Engaging children with CO messages from primary school age helps to ensure that future generations are well-informed and protected.
In 2018/19, our emergency engineers got out to gas leaks on the double, beating our regulatory response targets. We continued to replace old gas pipes nearing the end of their useful life, which helped us to improve the overall 'risk' score of our network. That means fewer leaks and an even more reliable supply for customers. Our performance in replacing service pipes - the smaller pipes that connect individual properties - has been behind target in recent years. We missed our regulatory target in 2018/19, partly because we had fewer emergency repairs which required us to replace service pipes.
